Home is In Between by Mitali Perkins; illustrated by Lavanya Laidu. 2021. Published by Farrar Straus Giroux.
Brief summary: Shanti says good-bye to her Didu who lives in Bengali and gets on the plane to America. She leaves Summer and arrives in Fall. She goes back and forth from home where they eat Bangla cooking and speak in her native language to going outside where she learns American culture through food, stories, and holidays. Shanti goes home and learns to dance Kathak and then goes to school to learn ballet. She goes back and forth learning another language and culture while still maintaining and learning about her native culture in India. Shanti learns to embrace both cultures making them “in between”.
Comments: I love how the author told us about being able to embrace and learn both cultures while not losing the one in which Shanti immigrated from. Being “in between” was hard at first but later, became her home; a little of each. Positive attitude. Delightful illustrations. Great book for teachers to share especially ESL teachers.
